This is going to be an interesting winter. We’ve been working from home for the better part of a year now, and there is a light at the end of the tunnel with a coronavirus vaccine on the way. Since most of us may not get that vaccine until spring or summer, however, it looks like remote working will remain our way of life. Add that to mid-winter blahs, and you may have some employees who struggle mentally to stay in the game.
That means it is more important than ever to stay the course and keep your staff motivated and engaged through team building. This is true for M3 Group as well.
M3 Group has a “Buzz Team” whose job it is to promote team building. If we were in the building right now, it would be the Buzz Team’s busiest season, as M3 Group is known for our host of holiday shenanigans including “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” Secret Santa, a potluck holiday meal that rivals any family gathering and decorating our giant holiday tree, just to name a few.
But we’re currently working from home — there will be no super-cool workspace, no daily gift and no holiday hijinks.
Or will there?
We’re here to tell you that you can celebrate the holidays with your team even if no one is in the office.
Here are a few tips from our Buzz Team for keeping your staff engaged and sharing the spirit of the holidays.
Use a website like elfster.com to enter and draw names. Your staff can shop and ship gifts for a virtual gift exchange.
Participating staff can make cookies and mail them to each other. Or designate a leader to do a baking tutorial over Zoom. Have the team share its results.
Much like the cookie exchange above, you can send your staff supplies and have them gather virtually for painting fun. It’s quite enjoyable to see where everyone’s painting skill sets lie.
We’ve played this game with various themes during quarantine. For the holidays, have your staff submit a holiday photo of them as a child to one staff volunteer. Host a Zoom game where the volunteer will bring up each picture while the staff guess who it is.
Those are just a few examples, but it’s important to remember that personal outreach
is also important. Taking the time to call or talk to your team members one on one about how grateful you are for their hard work is important. Staying connected and showing appreciation and trust go a long way in this day and age.
It’s also a great time to get to know your co-workers and be mindful of which holiday they celebrate and how. Inclusivity is another key to team building.
Just like we tell our clients, don’t disappear. Your customers want to know you are still there for them, and you should be advertising that fact.
The same goes for your staff. Don’t disappear.
